The Ghanaian fashion space is growing. There are increasing numbers of players delivering high quality fashion products like clothing, shoes, bags, jewelry, makeup and beauty products. The Ghana fashion scene has also seen an increase in the number of photographers, models and Ghanaian fashion blogs.
Today the spotlight is on Raffia.
Raffia was founded in 2013 by Madonna Kendona-Sowah.
An avid consumer of all things fashion, she realised that northern Ghanaian textiles aka “Gonja cloth” or “batakari” didn’t feature in mainstream designs. Seeing an opportunity to combine her love of fashion and her training in Economic Development, she founded Raffia. The label showcases beautiful textiles with elegant designs and promotes employment and education in the Northern and Upper East regions of Ghana.
Why the name ‘Raffia’?
According to Madonna, she wanted a name that captures everything the brand is about. When she founded the company, she saw an opportunity to change some of the negative perceptions people have of Northern Ghana, being a child of the North herself.
She compares Northern Ghana to the Raffia palm, which is rough and dry in its raw state but can be used to make beautiful things.
