Purchasing a wig is a big investment, but with the proper wig maintenance it can go a long way towards preserving and ensuring that it continues to look its best for years to come. Wigs are here to stay, and taking care of them is something that should be taken seriously because they need just as much maintenance (if not more) than your own hair. Whether you’re looking to store a cheap synthetic,or an expensive wig made from real hair, here are a few tips for wig maintenance to help keep it looking fabulous:
Wigs are fairly durable, but there are certain things that you should try and keep them away from. If possible, store your wigs away from direct sunlight, heat, and dust. These things can dull the color of your wig and degrade it, making it more likely to fall apart.
Your Closet Isn’t Just For Clothes Anymore.
If you have the room for it, storing your wigs in your bedroom closet is a smart choice. Keeping your wigs in your bedroom closet ensures that your wigs are easily accessible to you, while keeping them safe from everyone else!
Use A Wig Stand or Mannequin.
Wigs are best stored on a wig stand or on a mannequin. Even if you don’t have the room to keep all your wigs on stands, invest in at least one stand or mannequin to store the wig you use most often. Storing your wig on a stand or mannequin will help the wig maintain its style and save you time in the morning when you’re getting dressed.
Travel with Care.
If you are taking your wig on a trip, be sure to store it in a sturdy container. Doing this will help ensure that your wig doesn’t accidentally get crushed or tangled in your luggage! If you find yourself needing to travel frequently with your wigs, consider investing in a custom wig box and fold ability travel wig stand to ensure that your wig remains properly stowed throughout your trip.
Don’t neglect your own hair to wear a wig
Wearing a wig is not an excuse to forget about your own hair! Always make sure your hair is clean, pulled back or braided to avoid hair showing outside of the wig. It’s also recommended that you use a wig cap to keep hair clean and moisturized (if you have dry hair, condition your hair then put on a wig cap).
Do invest in shampoo and conditioner especially for your wig
For those of you who didn’t know, there are shampoos and conditioners especially for wigs. It is important that you invest in these products because the chemicals of regular shampoos and conditioners are too harsh for wig hair, especially synthetic wig hair.
Using regular shampoo on your wig can ruin the hair’s texture or leave it in a tangled mess, so be careful to invest in these products. Your washing technique should be different, too–soak your wig in shampoo and water and comb the shampoo or conditioner gently through the hair. Do not rub or message the wig. Rinse with warm water, then detangle it and let it dry. Invest in a wig brush to brush the tangles out of the hair.
Wigs are a fun and easy way to change up your style. Proper wig maintenance will make it look fabulous for a long time! Consult a stylist or wig expert for ideas of which type of wig is best for you!
